Some life goals should be big. Have a family , that was one of mine. Or small. Become a better skier than my father ; that was one I had from a young age. I did achieve that, and now I’ve got to parlay it into stay in shape enough to keep up with MY kids.
But today I was able to achieve a goal of a different sort. I go t some, ahem, Opposite Lock , in a (stolen) golf cart, in the snow.
I was at a work function on a college campus, and a colleague had use of a golf cart from catering. On my way out, I stuck literally any key-shaped object in the ignition, and took it for a spin. It was a long-wheelbase cart, set up for carrying food of course. It was empty. The rear end came around. I had to go full-oppo to bring it back . It was all so slow and controlled. Like sliding a kid in a plastic sled across ice. But silent, because of the fresh snow, and the electric drivetrain. It was glorious. I straightened it out, then swung the tail again bringing it back to where I found it.
At which point, two other colleagues came out the door and were like, “What? Are you...? Oh you’ve gotta park it around the corner where he won’t find it right away.” So I did. Icing on the cake, really.
I highly recommend snow-nuts in a golf cart. Long wheelbase, if you can.
That is all.

Sounds absolutely glorious! Can't imagine being the co worker on this case.

Snowy parking lots are the best, followed by wet parking lots.

Feelings Ranked:
1. Love

3. The transition of weight hopping back and forth on a fast motorcycle through turns

For a short time I years ago as a college student I had a campus work placement as “student security” ( yeah it was a low period) . However one up side to the job was absolutely thrashing the security golf cart. I would drift it, do time trial style laps of the certain parking lot “ courses” and try to beat my records, even took it on a 4 wheeler trail into the woods and got it stuck (i had to push it out myself). I ended up being the last “ student” security placement as they realized what a massive liability it was. One time I almost got into a fight because of my attitude (man, i was an idiot back then).

“ Become a better skier than my father”
This one is funny to me. I grew up thinking my parents were pro skiiers and how I wished I could be as good as them as well. I mean they had been to Vermont and Colorado, they must be the best! Like 20 years later, I had been skiing on my own for quite some time mainly skiing side country woods trails off black diamonds. I took my dad on a ski trip as a christmas gift and man did I over anticipate his skill level. I just hadnt thought about how he was a blue square skiier, someone competent enough to make it down the hill without dying and enjoy the day but definitely not a mogul field or steeps skiier. We went down a double black in vermont and it took about 45 minutes of struggling falling down every other mogul to get to the bottom. Glad I didnt drag him through the woods to die from a tree..
Speaking of oppo in a non-car, I very much enjoy using the rear brakes on a bicycle to “e brake drift” around things. Feels suuuuper sketchy but is always fun, especially on wet grass.

I did that with my sisters( or was it mine) ? golf cart.
(worked on it so much, It stayed at my house).
When the yard was wet I let off the throttle and floor it while giving it a little steering and let it slide. More throttle = more slide :D

Golf carts are dangerously fun. I was able to get one get onto two wheels while doing a J-turn slightly down hill. Extremely sketchy but also extremely entertaining.

I had a job raking leaves out of the drainage along dirt roads at a summer camp. First job at 14, $4.25/hr. I was overpaid. Most of our time was spent thrashing the golf cart. I almost threw myself out of it around a downhill corner, the only thing I held onto was the steering wheel as my body was tossed out the side like a cartoon character. We hit a tree and bent the bumper, so our solution was to hit another tree on the other side. And so on, and so forth. We also removed the governor, it was a gas model.

somewhere in there is the feeling of making a great save, whether on skis or a bike or a car... I feel like surfing feels that way, all the time. I’ve described it as the feeling you get hucking a cliff on skis, but like, the whole time you’re on a wave.
PS check out the Pe’ ahi Challenge that happened recently, PADDLING into Pe’ahi / Jaws off Maui.

This was after we got to the place for our lunch and the side door into the function room was locked. Someone offered to go around and I said “I bet I can break into this door faster than you can go around.” And I did.

I’ve done them on the the Grom but they’re more comical than engaging. I can only imagine a bike that can get up on power alone. Has to be amazing.

Oh yea! The “whoa, def almost died right there.” feeling. The highlights from this years comp at Jaws is insane! That one wipeout it looked like the guy fell 5 stories.

Related: did you see Kai Lenny’s ride on that wave last year (jaws/peahi) where he cut back to the top and when he turned down, he dropped like, 30 feet (? - hard to tell exactly - ), landed and kept going.

Yeah, I can’t believe these dudes can ride out a little chop let alone when they just drop like that!
